Local music scene gets Web site
There’s a new social networking Web site in town.
The Northfield Music Collective — northfieldcollective.com — launched last year as a vehicle for those in and out of Northfield to better appreciate the music scene in town.
Offering users the ability to upload music, photos and video from their own work, the site’s creator is banking on 2010 being a breakout year.
The site is the brainchild of 2007 St. Olaf alumnus and musician Peter Lynn, who now lives in St. Paul.
Lynn is metro born and raised. Though, his adoration for Northfield and its arts — specifically music — is palpable.
““It’s a home away from home for me,” he said. “I think it’s underappreciated by the Twin Cities and the state of Minnesota.”
Since graduation, Lynn often receives call from bands that have booked shows at local establishments but are short a man. He’s not the only one that is often called on.
Thus the genesis of the Web site.
“It occurred to me that there can’t be too many communities out there where you can just draw a name from a hat of a musician and have him show up,” Lynn said.
“There’s something special here,” added Doug Bratland, a Northfield musician and Web content specialist for the site. “The idea of having this site for the local music community, it’s a way to communicate amongst each other.”
Northfield Music Collective also serves as a calendar for music events in town, which is updated by both Bratland and individuals.
More than 100 photos, and a dozen videos and songs are accessible through the site. Members can also post blogs, engage in discussions and link to other social networks.
Though, Bratland says the collective has an edge over other Web sites.
“I like that this is something just for Northfielders,” he said.
Lynn said the Web site will grow to include those outside of the area in hopes people will come to town to experience the talent on display daily from the bars to the colleges.
“I think this is a good way to stand up and announce the importance of Northfield,” he said.
